Are you the kind of person who needs to wake up slowly, sipping on a cup of coffee and munching on some toast as you get ready to face the day? Or are you a go-getter who hits the ground running and wants to get a jump on the day? Whether you’re a morning person or not, a breakfast nook can be the perfect place to start your day with a cup of coffee or tea, a little bit of sunlight, and a comfy space to sit while you read the latest news headlines or go over your to-do list for the day. Here are a few of our favorite ways to create a breakfast nook like this that won’t break the bank.
It Doesn’t Have to Be in the Kitchen
First of all, when most people think of breakfast nooks, they immediately think of a booth or corner table in the kitchen. Your morning wake-up spot doesn’t have to be a booth, and it doesn’t even have to be in the kitchen. You could put in a small table and chair or a one-person hammock chair in a sunny corner of your back porch, or you could add a bench or booth to a bay window in your living room.
Basically, as you choose the spot for your breakfast nook, look for a space in your home where you can enjoy a little sunlight in the mornings and where you feel calm and relaxed. If you want to use your mornings to get some work done over breakfast or you want to have a place to set your coffee down as you read, you’ll want to make sure you have enough space for a small table or desk. That’s as much restriction as you really have for creating your nook, though.
Satisfy All Your Senses with Your Décor
If you like to ease into the day, be sure to choose a space that’s quiet, where you won’t be disturbed by a lot of noise. Add a pretty floral arrangement to the table to add color and a lovely scent to please both the eyes and the nose. Think of the mindset you’ll be in when you sit here, whether you’re taking a moment to get ready for work or you’re enjoying a slow Sunday morning. This will help you choose the best spot in the house and the best booth, table, and/or chair(s).
Choose Bright Colors to Help You Wake Up
If you’ve chosen to add a booth to your kitchen for your breakfast nook, you don’t have to go with the exact color scheme as the rest of the kitchen. Especially if you have your nook built into a bay window, you can go with some brightly colored cushions and pillows that contrast with the rest of the kitchen for an inviting look and feel.
Yellow and blue are especially popular breakfast nook color choices, as they’re reminiscent of sunlight and a blue sky. Red and white work well, too, as red is vibrant and white tends to temper the boldness and brightness of the red.
Create Space With an Abbreviated Countertop
If you’re looking for a space to put your breakfast nook, you may have more room than you think in your kitchen. Do your countertops extend all the way from one wall of the kitchen to the other? You may be able to have your kitchen counter modified to leave a corner free where you can install a booth or a simple chair and table for your nook.
Add Lighting to Elevate Your Mood
Whether you look forward to the time you spend in your nook each morning or you’re just really not a morning person, you can elevate your mood with the right lighting. Some days you’ll have to get up before dawn, so some whimsical hanging lanterns or recessed lights with a dimmer can help you ease into the day without turning on all of the lights in the room. That way you won’t feel jarred awake with harsh light. Instead you’ll be able to enjoy some warm, soothing ambient light to get your morning started right.
Use these tips to find the inspiration you need to create the perfect breakfast nook for your home and your style. You can get every day started on the right foot when you have a morning sanctuary where you can enjoy coffee and breakfast in peace as you prepare for your day.
