Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese practice of balancing the flow of energy through a space. According to Feng Shui, people are affected by the way their surroundings are placed and presented. A poorly arranged space can cause stress and anxiety, while a carefully designed one can provide a calm and productive energy, as shown here. When it comes to the bedroom, promoting quality, restful sleep is at the forefront. Follow these five Feng Shui rules to perfect your sleeping space.
1. Choose a Tall Bed
Feng Shui principles tell us that it is very important to allow positive energy to circulate around you and your bed while you sleep. This means that the bed should be a good distance off the floor. You should also avoid any kind of under-bed storage, which blocks this important energy highway and interferes with deep, restful sleep.
2. Don’t Place Your Bed Against A Window
Your bed should be a placed against a completely solid wall, so as to not let your energy escape through windows or doors. It is also recommended to choose a solid headboard for the same reason- avoid headboards with slats or other open designs. This protects your personal energy and keeps it from becoming weak as it circulates around you in your sleep.
3. Choose Round Nightstands
Sharp corners are too harsh for the bedroom, and are even referred to by Feng Shui as “the poison arrows” due to the effect they can have on anxious energy. Choose nightstands that are round or have rounded corners to avoid this surge of negative energy. It is also important to have the same nightstand on each side of the bed to center your energy and to achieve balance, especially if you share the bed with a spouse or partner. This will promote equality in the relationship.
4. Don’t Line Up Your Bed with the Door
Lining your bed up with the bedroom door allows too much energy to flow in at you, disturbing relaxation and sleep. Place your bed in an area where you can still see the door, but not directly across from it. This way you can feel secure in seeing anyone who may enter, but are more shielded from the door’s energy flow.
5. Remove Work and Entertainment Items
The bedroom should be a space dedicated for sleep and relaxation. Working, paying bills or watching television invites an aura of stress or excitement into the room. This is not conducive to sleep and undermines any other steps you may have taken to provide positive, restful energy into your bedroom. Save these activities for other rooms.
Feng Shui can seem incredibly complicated and intimidating. It is possible, however, to break down and simplify these age-old philosophies into easy to follow modern guidelines for optimizing the energy in our homes. Incorporating these five Feng Shui rules into your bedroom design will optimize the restful energy you feel there, and will give you enough basic knowledge of the art to begin to assess other areas of your living space.
