New York City is often referred to as “the city that never sleeps,” but its residents actually do, of course. While a loft apartment in one of the most high-end New York City neighborhoods sounds like a glamorous, relaxing getaway, without the careful consideration of an experienced designer, it may be little more than a sparsely-furnished room to catch some z’s. It’s the hope of Mary-Lynn Ring hat luxury Manhattan residences become much more than that.

Mary-Lynn of Mary-Lynn Ring Design, LLC has been working for over a decade in the field of high end interior design and decoration. Her goal? To enhance her client’s quality of life through providing beautifully designed spaces that help her clients “be the best possible version of themselves.” Armed with her education from New York School of Interior Design and a love for carefully crafted spaces, Mary-Lynn tackles both high-end residential and commercial design from her Manhattan workspace.

For Mary-Lynn, the starting point for any new project is always gaining a firm understanding of her client’s wants and needs. She asks many questions to determine what aesthetic the client desires, what functions they need the space to perform, what timeframe they have in mind for the project, and what budget they are working with.

The project can be anything from room redecorations to renovations to new construction. With Mary-Lynn, clients aren’t limited to only what is available on the market: she often designs custom furniture pieces, cabinetry, and millwork for clients who desire something a little extraordinary for their space.

“I often use custom pieces to tie together two styles or colors, because I have complete control over them,” says Mary-Lynn.

This can come in handy especially when she is working to bring together the varied tastes of a couple with different aesthetic goals.

She explains, “I don’t want anyone to feel like they won. I want them both to feel like they won!”

Mary-Lynn focuses particularly on incorporating texture and luxurious materials into her designs, such as cerused oak, faux and real shagreen, mohair, silk, velvet, leather, and many others. While she prefers natural fabrics to synthetics, she admits that there are times when quality synthetics can be preferable based on a client’s needs.

While some couples with young children prefer using outdoor fabrics, such as solution-dyed acrylics for durability, Mary-Lynn encourages clients to opt for their preferences and just live their lives. She may recommend leather furniture for families with young children, since the patina is considered desirable in leather, but she also utilizes a fair amount of other natural fibers that are removable and machine-washable. Mary-Lynn encourages clients to “create a beautiful space you really want to live in it.”

“It’s not a museum,” she says.

For a client who has never worked with an interior designer, the process can seem daunting, but a conversation with Mary-Lynn will soon put any prospective client at ease. Mary-Lynn especially enjoys using her expertise to help young couples who have just gotten started building their home together. She makes sure to find quality pieces for first-timers to invest in, including some antiques so that there’s history to the design.

“I like to have some heirlooms that their kids would one day have in their own home,” she says. “It’s not just for them now. I’m having a hand in the story that gets passed down. That’s pretty exciting.”

Mary-Lynn’s passion for beauty and the positive impact of space is apparent in both her speech and her work. A former actress, Mary-Lynn says that when performing, her favorite part was always when the set was installed. It seemed to have a positive impact on her ability to get into character.

“When I left acting, this field was a natural fit for me,” says Mary-Lynn. “The environment you create has tremendous potential to influence the people who live in that space.”

Her talent, coupled with a genuine passion for design, make Mary-Lynn Ring Design, LLC an excellent choice for any homeowner in need of an interior designer.
