6 Ways to Upgrade Your Kitchen Without a Full Remodel

When you look at your kitchen and all you see is an uninspired space, you may be thinking about doing a complete overhaul. Replacing cabinets and countertops or installing new fixtures can cost you a lot of time and money, and if you aren't ready for a huge project you can feel like you’re stuck with your blah space forever. Here are six great and inexpensive ways you can give your kitchen a makeover without tearing it apart.

Install a Creative Backsplash

A backsplash behind your stove not only helps keep your walls from staining, it offers a beautiful area of color and texture. You can buy simple stick-on mosaic tiles to affix to your walls yourself, or you can bring out your creative side and create your own DIY backsplash. Here's how: simply break ceramic plates in varying designs (buy them at your local thrift store) and affix them to your walls using an adhesive and grout. A simple tile sealer finishes off your beautiful work.

Reupholster Your Kitchen Chairs

You can make everything match or choose alternating patterns to make your kitchen chairs stand out in a charming way. Simply remove the cushions on your kitchen chairs and wrap them in a beautiful new material of your choosing, then secure the material in place using fabric glue or a staple gun. Whether you choose velvet, a floral pattern, or cheeky chevron, your chairs can look new and inviting without replacing them!

Paint or Sand Your Cabinets

A simple upgrade to your cabinets can make your kitchen look brand-new again. Consider painting your cabinet doors and drawer faces a beautiful hue, such as eggshell white, mint green, or even a rich chocolate brown. If they are natural wood, remove the doors and sand them down to a smooth finish before applying a sealant in any hue you wish. If you have a darker kitchen, then a honey finish is a great way to brighten things up. If your kitchen is large and bright already, add some drama by finishing your cabinets in a cherry or deep walnut color.

Install New Hardware

If painting or refinishing your cabinets and drawers sounds like too much work, then consider upgrading the hardware in your handles and hinges instead. Opt for twisting wrought iron pieces, glamorous copper, or even mosaic tile handles that sparkle with color and unique appeal. Choose styles that work best with your current cabinet designs- for instance, tall cabinets can benefit from streamlined hardware, whereas colorful, smaller cabinetry can take advantage of twisting, fun styles. You can buy the hardware you need (and the accompanying screws) at your local hardware store.

Add Detail

Sometimes it's the little touches that make all the difference in a room that lacks creativity. Consider placing a rack along your wall to hang colorful coffee mugs from, painting a single wall a beautiful, bold hue (think: turquoise, burgundy, or even goldenrod yellow), using an antique teapot as your centerpiece, or building a small window box to grow fresh herbs in. These small touches can give your kitchen personality.

Upgrade the Wallpaper

If your kitchen or dining room is already wallpapered, you may simply need to give the design a more modern touch. Stripes, rich floral patterns, and diamond designs can replace the outdated kitschy styles that currently adorn your walls. Use a solvent to loosen the current wallpaper adhesive to remove it from your walls, then wipe down your walls for a clean finish to work with when placing new wallpaper. You can mix-and-match your patterns, such as combining stripes with floral hues to give your kitchen a totally modern look you will love.
