Types of Vinyl Wallpaper; Patterns, Styles, and More

Wallpaper isn't like it used to be. With vinyl wallpaper, your walls will be more protected and gorgeous than ever, so give your space the refresh it deserves.

Wallpaper has come a long way from the dated floral prints your grandma had pasted in her bathroom in 2005. There are new patterns, new materials, and new techniques that have made wallpaper a game changer in the world of interior design. If you've been wondering how you can give your home a whole new look this year, we're here to tell you that you can achieve your dream look with--you guessed it--wallpaper!

Vinyl wallpaper has grown in popularity recently, thanks to its durability and versatility. The type of material you decide on is just as important as the pattern. Depending on your style and the types of changes you're looking to make in your home, there are tons of wallpaper options out there for you.

Fabric-backed Vinyl

This kind of wallpaper is usually solid in colors, because it's difficult to print very detailed designs on this kind of texture. It's a dense fabric that is similar to cheesecloth. It's great if you have kids, because you can literally scrub the material with a sponge and some soap if there are stains on it.

It is impermeable to water, which means that it's great for a kitchen or bathroom. It will last for many years and when you decide to remove it, it will come off the wall in a single strip.

Some people use fabric-backed vinyl on uneven walls, to cover up marks and nicks.

Paper-backed Vinyl

This wallpaper is printed, and there is a wide variety of patterns and colors to choose from. Like fabric-backed vinyl, it can be scrubbed, and it is stain and grease resistant. However, it is not meant for bathrooms, as steam will weaken the seams and the paste used to install it, and eventually it will separate from its paper backing.

Vinyl-Coated Paper

Basically, this one is a wallpaper with a mist of liquid vinyl sprayed over it. Intricate patterns and pretty floral designs are offered in this material. It is not as durable or as easily cleaned as the previous vinyl materials mentioned, but the vinyl spray does have minimal protection against stains.

Vinyl wallpaper is great if you're looking for something durable that will last a while. The styles are more limited than paper, though, so if you're looking for a specific intricate design, regular wallpaper is the best option.

2018 has brought new wallpaper patterns to life, and new ways to bring old patterns to life, too. Here are a few of the most trendy styles from this year.

Symmetrical Shapes

Geometric patterns with clean, symmetrical shapes and lines bring a sense of order into the room, and can offer a boldness. This unique style masters the balance of creating visual interest without being overwhelming.

You can incorporate geometric patterns into any room in your home to create a beautiful look. Keep the size of the room in mind, and let that help you choose the color and how bold or subtle the pattern should be. Some prefer to use wallpaper on the entire room, while others like to pick an accent wall. Consider your space and your preferred pattern, and let that guide your decision to best decorate your space.

Metallic Elements

Incorporating a metallic element into your home with wallpaper is a genius idea. It's glamorous without being "too much." With the right choice, you can achieve an elegant look while being simplistic.

When it comes to metallic wallpaper, less is more. For spacious rooms, one wall is perfect for a focal point. The metallic pieces can reflect some light outward, drawing your eyes to that wall. While metallic wallpaper is perfect for formal spaces like dining rooms and foyers, it is also perfect for smaller spaces like mud rooms and bathrooms. You will love how introducing a shimmering element can change a space and bring focus to certain points of the room.

Also, if you want something even more glamorous, try glittery metallic prints!

Floral Prints

Floral wallpaper has been popular since forever, because there are endless ways to incorporate it into a room, and it ends up looking good every single time. The way you focalize it in your home will make all the difference.

With floral, you can be vintage, modern, light, dark, delicate, or loud. You can be soft, with pinks and reds; or bold with dark purples and blues. You can achieve absolutely any style.

While floral prints are great for main living spaces, like living rooms and bedrooms, they are also great for places that you might not think about. They can bring a dramatic look to a bathroom or a patio room, and will give any kitchen a nice touch.

As you can see, there are tons of wallpaper styles to pick from. There are no limits when it comes to materials, patterns, or colors. Your home will feel brand new after some new wallpaper!
