Not everyone is blessed with having a big master bedroom. In fact, most people week probably tell you that they never have enough space. If you are renting or trying to downsize, you might find yourself struggling to make it all fit. You might even find yourself growing frustrated with your tiny space. Fret not, we are here to help!
If you want your room to appear larger than it is, you can install French doors. The double doors will make the room seem larger and let in plenty of natural light. This is the perfect way to let the outdoors in while still maintaining your ties to the house. This will also help freshen the air in your room. The only issue with keeping your doors open is that it might allow bugs and animals in. You can research plants that deter bugs and place them around your doors, and you can also maintain a fenced-in yard to help with these issues.
To give your room the appearance of being taller, you can use drapes that go all the way to the floor. You can also pick a bed that has high bed posts. To keep your bed from looking bulky in the small space, choose a frame that does not have a prominent footboard. If your master bedroom already has a tall ceiling, you might want to try adding some horizontal decorations. One excellent way to do this is with wood paneling in the walls. Have the grain of the panels extend horizontally. If you are not a fan of paneling, you can paint stripes on your walls. Just try to stick with soft, natural colors. If you go with bold colors, the effect can be flashy and distracting. Adding the horizontal elements makes your room appear wider than it actually is. It tricks your eyes.
Wall decorations will also help trick you into thinking that your space is bigger. You can choose to go with a few of your own personal pictures. This trick draws your eye to the picture instead of allowing you to focus on the size of the room right away. The best spot to hang your wall decoration is above the headboard of your bed. Be careful not to overload your walls though. Doing so will make it appear cluttered, canceling out the appearance of being bigger.
If you want to be bold somewhere, be bold in your furniture choices. Picking soft and natural colors for paint is perfect for relaxing. Adding the desired colors can be done with bedding, furniture, and accessories such as lamps. These can also work as your focal points while designing and decorating your master bedroom. By using one or two colorful items as your focal point, you can once again give the illusion of having a bigger room. It will draw your eye instead of letting you focus on the size.
Using a pattern will also help break up the space. You can insert a pattern using an area rug or some kind of wallpaper. The pattern will help break up the wall space, making it appear larger. Try to pick a small repeating pattern though. A large pattern will not break up the space as effectively. If you think your wallpaper choice will be to jarring, you can split the pattern, only applying to the top half of the walls. You can paint or put wood paneling on the other half.
To extend your space even further, choose furniture that is elevated on legs. This includes your bedside table. Being able to see the floor going underneath the furniture will give the room a more open and inviting feel.
I hope this article helps you make the most of your small master bedroom or improve what you already have. The master bedroom is your space, and you need to be able to enjoy it.
